Cancer of the Colon

Malignant neoplasm of the large bowel; 70% of cases occur in the rectosigmoid area. It is the second most common malignancy in adult. Occurs after 4th decade, peaks in the 7th decade.
Risk Factor:
- Family History
- Possibly related to increase fat in diet, food additives, low fiber or chronic constipation.
Symptoms:
- Change in bowel habits, blood in the stool.
- Vague dull pain.
- Anorexia, weight loss, weakness and anemia.
- Signs of obstruction
- Hemorrhage
Medical Treatment:
- Surgical Intervention, colon resection
- Medical Intervention, radiation and chemotherapy
Management:
- Counsel client regarding surgery and status of health
- Instruct client to continue taken in of high fiber foods and increase his fluids intake.
- Allow client to verbalize fears and concerns.
Colostomy - surgical creation of opening into the abdominal wall for bowel elimination.
Colostomy Care:
- Teach client how to apply, remove and empty pouch.
- Irrigate with warm tap water.
- Reassure client that bowel retaining possible.
- Change stoma appliance as needed.
- Wash site with warm water and mild soap every 3 days.
- Change adhesive layer to prevent skin irritation.
- Dietary restriction layer to prevent stoma blockage, diarrhea, flatus and odor.
- Increase fluid intake especially in hot weather.
- Encourage patient to discuss feeling about resuming sexual relationship.
