Alzheimer’s Disease
It is a chronic, progressive and deteriorate brain disorder accompanied by profound effects on memory, cognition, and ability for self-care. Its cause remains unknown, the onset of the condition is between ages 40 and 90 but most ofter after age 65.
Signs and Symptoms:
- Significant forgetfulness
- Loss of ability to read, write or eventually to speak intelligently
- Personality changes
- Disorder of motor function, including disorder of gait.
Management:
- No treatment presently known to prevent or arrest underlying pathologic process.
- Behavioral interventions are used to manage memory problems and intellectual dysfunctions.
- Encourage family to become part of supportive group that functions to educate latest developments on Alzheimer’s disease; this help them to know, anticipate and plan for changes.
- Support family’s decision to place the patient in an extended care facilities.
