Alzheimer’s Disease



It is a chronic, progressive and deteriorate brain disorder accompanied by profound effects on memory, cognition, and ability for self-care. Its cause remains unknown, the onset of the condition is between ages 40 and 90 but most ofter after age 65.

Signs and Symptoms:

  1. Significant forgetfulness
  2. Loss of ability to read, write or eventually to speak intelligently
  3. Personality changes
  4. Disorder of motor function, including disorder of gait.

Management:

  1. No treatment presently known to prevent or arrest underlying pathologic process.
  2. Behavioral interventions are used to manage memory problems and intellectual dysfunctions.
  3. Encourage family to become part of supportive group that functions to educate latest developments on Alzheimer’s disease; this help them to know, anticipate and plan for changes.
  4. Support family’s decision to place the patient in an extended care facilities.
