Taking an Oral Temperature

The usual way to take the temperature is by mouth. The glass thermometer is left in the mouth for three minutes. Electronic thermometers signal with a “beep” sound when the reading is complete. Single use thermometer will give results in 60 second.

Older Adults Normal Range of Vital Signs

Temperature:
Oral - 95º to 97º or 35 to 36ºc
Rectal - 95.2º to 98.6º or 35.1ºc to 35.5ºc
Axillary - 94º to 96º or 34.4 ºc to 35.5ºc
Pulse : 70 to 76 pulse per minute
Respirations: 20 to 22 cycles per minute (more shallow that younger adult)
Blood Pressure: 120/80 mmhg to 140/90mmhg
